Shop tells youngsters where it’s at
Date published: 31/01/2005
The Information Shop is at the hub of the Young People’s Centre and has been visited by more than 100 teenagers since its opening in September last year.
Tina Woodward, of Rochdale’s Youth Service, said: “We have had a very positive response since opening and we’re aiming to get known ‘on the street’ as a good source of information for young people.”
The ‘Shop’ provides information leaflets about services and advice on many topics relevant to teenagers.
They can either ‘drop in’ during the monthly Saturday sessions from 11am to 2pm or visit in school or youth groups on Mondays and Wednesdays.
They can also pick up and find out how to use the ‘Where it’s at’ pocket booklet. This is a mine of information covering issues as varied as legal rights, money, benefits, health, relationships homelessness, community services and travel. Tina said: “My role is not to give advice, but to signpost young people to the right person to get the advice they need.”
