Rochdale youngsters break barriers on holiday

Date published: 09/04/2008

Teenagers from Rochdale secondary schools took an Easter break away with a difference when they went on a residential holiday aimed at promoting cohesion among young people.

More than 80 youngsters went on the 5-day "Fusion 2008" trip to the Conway Centre in Anglesey and took part in a range of activities to get to know each other.

The young people were split into six groups did all the activities together, which helped to bond friendships and bridge stereotypes and divides.

The programme included canoeing, climbing, high ropes and raft building. There was also a show featuring dance, drama and music that was organised over the course of a day and performed in the evening.

Dave Baker, Senior Youth Officer at Rochdale Borough Council, said: "All the feedback we've had from the young people has been really positive. It was an exhausting few days but I think everyone got a lot out of the trip. There were stories of how stereotypes and fears of other 'types' of young people had been dispelled - and tales of how fears of heights and water had been conquered!"

Fusion 2008 was a first for Rochdale and it is hoped similar schemes will be run in future.
