Peace campaigners protest at plans to close A & E
Date published: 18/09/2006
Rochdale people were quick to take to the streets to protest at government plans to close the Accident and Emergency Department at Rochdale Infirmary. Members of Rochdale Stop the War Coalition and Littleborough and District Peace Group handed out leaflets to shoppers on Yorkshire Street on Saturday morning (16 September), telling them "Careless cuts costs lives. Save Rochdale A amp; E’.
Sam O’Brien said: "The New Labour government has squandered billions of pounds on taking lives abroad, but, now, they want to cut millions from services which save lives at home. This is one of many very important reasons to protest against the government. The Stop the War Coalition and CND are proud to invite everyone from Rochdale who wants our money spent on hospitals rather than on bombs to join our mass demonstration at the Labour conference next Saturday in Manchester. We expect to see many thousands of our neighbours in Albert Square at 1 pm on 23 September."
