Rochdale PCT Chief Executive Appointed to National Regulatory Body

Trevor Purt, Chief Executive at Rochdale Primary Care Trust has been appointed to sit as a member of the first elected Council of the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).
The Nursing and Midwifery Council is an organisation set up by Parliament to protect the public by ensuring that nurses, health visitors and midwives provide high standards of care to their patients and clients.
To achieve its aims, the NMC:
- Maintains a register of qualified nurses, midwives and specialist community public health nurses
- Sets standards for conduct, performance and ethics
- Provides advice for nurses and midwives
- Considered allegations of misconduct, lack of competence or unfitness to practise due to ill health.
Trevor Purt has been appointed by the appointments commission as a member of the NMC until July 2008 following his participation on the transitional council where he chaired the performance and business planning committee.
Trevor joins 6 other regulators nationwide who have secured their seats on the world’s largest regulatory council, monitoring in excessive of 650,000 clinicians The new Council takes office on 31 July 2006.

This is a significant period for the council as this is the first time nurses, midwives and specialist community public health nurses, have been able to elect colleagues to the Council.
