Where We Live Matters

Date published: 19/07/2004

'Where We Live Matters' is an exhibition that gives local residents an opportunity to view and comment on the design proposals for the development of housing on the former Dale Mill site in Hamer, Rochdale. The exhibition is taking place on Saturday 24 July, 11.00 am - 3.30 pm

The starting point for the exhibition is a series of portraits of local people and their views of the area. This incorporates diverse comments - good and bad - that relate to the local environment and living in inner Rochdale.

The portraits provide a backdrop to the innovative design proposals for the Dale Mill site, which will provide a range of affordable housing for outright sale, shared ownership or social rent. It is proposed that the majority of houses will be have three or four bedrooms, incorporating quality design standards, and environmental features promoting energy efficiency.

The Dale Mill scheme will be one of the first initiatives to be developed as part of the Housing Market Renewal (HMR) Initiative for East Central Rochdale (consisting of the Wardleworth, Hamer. Mayfield, Bellshill and Clover Hall neighbourhoods). The HMR initiative will promote the development of well-designed homes that will improve the quality of life for residents, fulfil the needs and aspirations of local people, promote pride in where they live and contribute to community cohesion. This is the start of the renewal process.

The redevelopment of the Dale Mill site is a partnership initiative involving, Rochdale Development Agency, Rochdale Council, Oldham & Rochdale Housing Market Renewal, Rochdale Housing Initiative, West Pennine Housing Association and Ashiana Housing Association.
