Drug dealers targeted in crackdown
Date published: 21/05/2008
More than 100 drug dealers across Greater Manchester are being targeted in a crackdown as part of National Tackling Drugs Week (19 to 24 May 2008).
Throughout the week there will be a series of dawn raids in a bid to disrupt the sale and use of drugs in the local communities across the region.
Greater Manchester Police Lead on drugs, Chief Superintendent Peter Mason said: "The use and sale of drugs causes devastating effects, which have far reaching consequences.
"It can be quite surprising how many crimes committed relate back to drugs, from robberies on the street to in extreme cases, murder.
"Throughout this week, we are focusing our activity on taking drugs off the streets by targeting the dealers who spread these dangerous substances."
Police are also highlighting the signs to look out for in relation to the cultivation of cannabis. Residential properties are often developed into cannabis factories.
There are often distinctive signs including people arriving and leaving properties at random times of the day and night as well as a pungent aroma in the area.
Chief Superintendent Mason continued: "Drugs are a really serious issue and the community play a vital role in providing information.
"Look out for anyone suspicious visiting a local property on a regular basis at strange times. Look out for large amounts of electrical wiring, light fittings, chemicals or compost being delivered to residential premises, or bright lights coming from a number of windows all night long.
"Properties used in this way are not easy to disguise in residential areas. Blacked out windows, a strong smell, and excessive heat coming from the premises are all clues that they are being used unlawfully.
"Landlords and letting agents can also play a key role in helping us identify suspects as cannabis farming is mostly carried out in rented property and the damage they can leave behind can cost tens of thousands of pounds to put right."
