Mounted police target Middleton estate

Date published: 13/05/2008

Officers from Greater Manchester Police´s mounted unit will be out in force in Middleton next week.

They will be carrying out high-visibility patrols on the Hollin Estate from Monday 19 to Wednesday 21 May to tackle anti-social behaviour and criminal damage caused by youths.

Police believe the mounted patrols in crime hotspots along with foot patrols from Middleton´s Neighbourhood Policing Team, will help to deter potential offenders.

The mounted unit will also visit St Anne´s Academy to support staff at the school in taking action against students involved in committing criminal damage on the estate.

In another phase of the initiative, police will visit residents´ homes with housing officers and representatives from the Hollin Estate Management Board to find out what issues are concerning them.

Inspector Gary Hall of the Middleton Neighbourhood Policing Team said: "The main purpose of our high-profile presence on the Hollin Estate next week is to provide reassurance to the community and to deal rigorously with anyone involved in anti-social behaviour.

"The quality of life for many residents is adversely affected by young people behaving in a disorderly way, and next week´s operation should help to reassure them that we take the problem of youth nuisance very seriously."
