Youths warned after Falinge attack

Date article online: 29/04/2008

Following an incident at Falinge Park in Rochdale last month when a school boy was attacked in what police believe describe as a 'racially motivated' assault, the Safer Communities Partnership is warning that they will not tolerate anti-social or racist behaviour.

Roger Ellis, Chair of the Partnership said the group are continuing to work closely with the Police, Rochdale Council and other key agencies to stamp out unacceptable behaviour: "We will do everything within our powers, including full use of the law, to make sure all residents in the Rochdale borough can live in peace and harmony - regardless of their ethnicity or religion. We hope that other youths acting in this way will note our determination and our ability to use the law to penalise anti-social behaviour."

Several suspects have been arrested following the incident and police enquiries are ongoing.

CCTV cameras have been installed in the area, with additional cameras to follow shortly.

The Safer Communities Partnership is encouraging young people to get involved in positive activities, with projects such as Unite, Fir Fly and Young people's discussion workshops. These are aimed at building understanding and tolerance whilst talking about the issues, using fun as a means of engaging young people.

Mr Ellis added: "We will continue to promote these types of activities so that our young people can build their capacity and become active citizens, creating a more prosperous and cohesive borough."

I am impressed with the speed with which the CCTV cameras have been installed!
Pity they are not so quick putting them in other trouble spots.
