Litter picker experiment a success

A month's trial of having a dedicated 'litter picker' in Castleton has been a huge success. Councillor Pat Flynn said she had never seen Castleton so clean and very much hoped the trial having made the case will now be adopted and Castleton could retain the litter picker to ensure the streets remain as clean as they are now.

Conservative Leader Ashley Dearnley said it was the Conservatives who had put forward this idea of dedicated ward street cleaners and he hoped that now the Lib Dems would support their introduction throughout the borough. He added that of all the issues councillors are being confronted with by the public the poor condition and lack of cleanliness of many areas of the borough was what disturbed them most.

Labour's Councillor Linda Robinson agreed and said that whilst canvassing she had lots of complaints about the "dirty borough".

The Lib Dem portfolio holder for the environment, Councillor Wera Hobhouse, promised to "look into" the possibility of borough-wide dedicated litter pickers.
