Kingsway and Waithlands Road closed as a result of a disturbance

Kingsway and Waithlands Road in Rochdale have been closed and are likely to remain closed for some time as a result of a disturbance in the area.

At about 4.20pm today,  Monday 22 January 2007, officers were called to Kingsway after reports two groups were causing a disturbance in the area near to McDonalds Restaurant.

Officers attended the scene and the incident is now under control.

One man has been taken to a local hospital with serious head injuries.

Two men have been arrested on suspicion of violent disorder and are currently in police custody.

UPDATE

A 26-year-old man remains in a critical condition in hospital after suffering serious head injuries.

A 27-year-old man and a 26-year-old man, both from Rochdale, arrested on suspicion of violent disorder, remain in police custody.

It is believed that the two groups of people were known to each other and that the fight was the result of an ongoing dispute between them.

Kingsway and Waithlands Road were closed while officers examined the area. Both roads are expected to re-open later today.
