End of the road for rogue drivers
Date published: 02/03/2007
Police in Rochdale have carried out a successful strike against rogue drivers in the Freehold, Newbold and Turf Hill areas of the borough.
During the operation police seized 22 uninsured or untaxed vehicles using Automated Number Plate Recognition technology (ANPR) and issued five fixed penalty notices.
Neighbourhood Inspector for Rochdale South, Carol Wright, said: "A number of untaxed and uninsured vehicles are being driven around the Rochdale area, and this presents a serious risk to the public.
"Offenders are often involved in other kinds of crime, and stopping them in their vehicles provides us with useful intelligence into their activities.
"We will continue to use ANPR technology to target offenders, and are warning drivers who break the law that they will be prosecuted and their vehicles seized."
Uninsured drivers are nine times more likely to have been convicted of drink driving and six times more likely to have been convicted of driving unroadworthy vehicles. They are also more likely to fail to stop at the scene of an accident and are responsible for increasing insurance premiums by up to £30 for each motorist.
