MEP warns 1000 days to save the world
Date published: 16/03/2007
Rochdale MEP Chris Davies has given a stark warning to European leaders - "We have less than 1000 days to save the world."
Chris Davies told the European Parliament in Strasbourg that an international agreement to fight climate change had to be secured by 2009 if measures to succeed the Kyoto Protocol are to be put in place before current agreements end.
The Liberal Democrat environment spokesman welcomed the decision made last week by Europe's Prime Ministers to take a lead by setting a minimum 20% carbon reduction target over the next 14 years.
But he said it was crucial to involve China, India and the United States in the process.
Mr Davies said: "The European Union has taken on the mantle of an evangelist in seeking to alert the world to the dangers of global warming.
"But if we are to succeed will need to inject a sense of zeal, passion and urgency into our work, especially on the diplomatic front.
"We should think of the challenge like this, and put it in dramatic terms. We have less than 1000 days in which to save the world by securing an international agreement on action."
