Manchester celebrates World Co-op Day

Date published: 09/07/2007

Allen Brett, vice-president of United Co-operatives and Simon Danczuk, Rochdale’s Labour Parliamentary Candidate, took time to celebrate World Co-op Day on Sunday 8 July at The Lowry, Salford Quays.

The day included theatre, arts and exhibitions, family fun, music, film, and discussion groups. There was street theatre, New Mills Brass Band, a Jazz Band, a lively market, a fashion show, West African drumming, and a chance for visitors to learn circus skills.

Simon Danczuk said: "The day was about celebrating how people and communities benefit from working together in a cooperative way. It’s great to think that what started in Rochdale all those years ago has grown into such an important way of delivering services and solving communities’ problems across the world. As well as lots of fun there was some serious discussion about how co-ops can really help."

The Labour Parliamentary candidate continued: "I went along with my kids and we had a fantastic time. We tried our hand at plate spinning, which I thought a very useful circus skill to develop as Rochdale’s Labour Parliamentary Candidate! We also watched the SUST fashion show, which showcased ethical clothing from both aspiring designers and national ethical retailers."

On a serious note Mr Danczuk stated: "I listened to Hazel Blears MP, the new Minister for Communities and Local Government. She made the point that she’d like to see more co-operatives providing social housing. I think this is something that could be developed in Rochdale.

"It would be great to see Rochdale Boroughwide Housing convert to a co-operative. It would give tenants a real stake in their homes, and increase their voice in how the organisation is run. It could also provide an opportunity for increasing the number of properties available for rent, a real issue in Rochdale."

He finally commented: "Hundreds of people came along and everyone had a great time. It’s a real credit to United Co-ops for hosting this event. It really does bring it home to you how important the co-operative movement is, not just locally in Rochdale, but nationally and internationally."
