Armed raiders hold up Tesco Express

Date published: 23/06/2007

Masked raiders dramatically held up Tesco Express in Bamford Precinct, Rochdale on Saturday afternoon, 23 June 2007.

At around 1:00pm, a blue, SK-registered Hyundai drew up outside with four men inside. One of the men stayed in the car while the other three, armed with a sledgehammer, a crowbar and a machete ran towards a security guard who was delivering cash to the cash machine. They threatened him, forcing him to hand over the cash. The men then forced
open the ATM, removing more cash.

The men, who were all dressed in dark clothing and were wearing balaclavas, then ran outside and the car drove off at speed towards Norden Road. It was later found abandoned on Dixon Fold, where it had been set on fire.

Customers and staff were left shocked by their ordeal, but no-one was injured.

Anyone who may have witnessed the men abandoning the car, or where they went afterwards, or who may have any information at all about the robbery, is asked to contact police on 0161 856 1977, or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
