Pedal pushers seek illegal parkers

Rochdale commuters parking illegally in Macnhester city centre are to be ticketed by traffic wardens on push bikes in a scheme thought to be the first of its kind in the UK.

The city council has said the bikes, which are in addition to foot patrols, are an environmentally-friendly option.

A spokesman said: "This scheme allows parking attendants to cover a wider area easily, without adding to the volume of motor traffic."

He said it would also help to reduce the council's carbon footprint.

"Their presence on the streets and their vigilance also makes a significant contribution to reducing crime and providing reassurance to those who live in the city, or who spend time here for work or pleasure," he added.
