Early start for new police chief
Date published: 08/08/2008
Greater Manchester Police's new chief constable will begin his new role two months before the original start date.
Peter Fahy, 49, will start work on 1 September after he had his three month notice as head of the Cheshire police force wavered.
The move will allow both forces to establish their new leaders at the earliest opportunity.
Father-of-four Fahy replaces Michael Todd, who was found dead in Snowdonia in March.
Greater Manchester Police is one of the country’s biggest forces and employs about 8,000 officers.
Russell Bernstein, GMPA deputy chief executive, said: “I hope people will agree moving ahead of schedule in this way is logical as it allows both authorities to concentrate on the business of establishing a new leader to take their respective forces forward at the earliest opportunity.”

I well and truly wish Mr. Fahy my very best wishes for success as the newly appointed Chief Constable of Greater Manchester. It is my sincere hope that his term in office will be graced with success in FIGHTING CRIME AND PROTECTING PEOPLE, as his predecessor, the extraordinary Chief Michael Todd (RIP, Sir) worked so hard to achieve.
