Greater Manchester Police cleans up its act!
Date published: 13/12/2005
From this week onwards, Greater Manchester Police will be using an environmentally friendly fuel in all its 1,275 diesel vehicles.
Biodiesel, which is produced from a mixture of vegetable oil and fossil diesel, emits lower levels of harmful emissions than traditional diesel.
As well as having huge benefits for the environment, scientific research also shows that Biodiesel has a less harmful impact on human health than traditional diesel.
GMP currently purchases over 3.5million litres of fuel per year at a cost of £2.4million pounds and no increase in cost is expected as a result of using the new fuel.
Russ Brown, Fleet Manager for GMP said: “This is a another step forward for GMP in helping to reduce our environmental impact. The use of Biodiesel will bring many benefits for us and for the communities we serve and I am sure it won’t be long before other forces and large companies will follow suit.”
None of GMP’s vehicles have undergone modification in order to use the fuel and there will be no adverse affects to the performance of the vehicles.
