College Bank Flats ready to Recycle

Date published: 16/11/2005

The Tenants and Residents Association in partnership with Rochdale Council are launching a recycling initiative for all 800 residents at College Bank flats in Rochdale.

The scheme will see each resident provided with three sacks, one for glass, one for cans and another for paper. Each block has been equipped with its own ‘mini-recycling centre’ with 2 dedicated bins, (in the basement), for glass and cans, whilst 4 paper bins have been situated outside the flats, (due to the fire hazards associated with paper waste). New recycling stickers have also been placed within every ‘chute’ room to remind people what they must not put in the normal household waste.

The scheme, has been spearheaded by the College Bank Tenants and Residents Association, (CBTRA) with funding from the Rochdale Township Fund, at the launch Sheila Bamford, secretary of CBTRA said:

“We have been working very hard to achieve these recycling facilities and are hoping that all residents will get involved with the scheme. Initially we have asked that the bins be emptied every fortnight and we will review this on a regular basis.”

Resident Sue Gollop added:

“This is a great move forward for the Council and gives people who live in high-rise buildings the chance to participate in the recycling schemes.”

Speaking on behalf of Rochdale Council, Tara Dumas Waste Minimisation Manager said:

“If everybody joins the scheme we will stop another 300 tonnes of waste going to Landfill every year which will add nearly half a percent onto our recycling target. Everybody wins by recycling and although we currently recycle 14%, we still need to achieve 20% by March 2006 if we are to avoid fines of £150 per tonne from Central Government.”
