Police warning about forged £20 notes

Date published: 11/11/2005

Police in Middleton are warning local residents to be extra vigilant after a number of fake £20 notes have been found in circulation in the area.

Since the middle of October 2005 officers have noticed an increase in the number of forged notes that have been reported. A number of these have had the same serial number, PF20695103.

Residents and retailers are being advised to check all notes carefully and, if they have any doubts about the authenticity of a note, take it to their local police station.

Sergeant Simeon HOLT from Middleton said: "We have been made aware of a number of incidents of forged notes in the Middleton and Bury area. I would therefore advise members of the public and businesses to take extra care checking their money.

"If a business is presented with a fake note they should try to take down as much information as possible about the person who gave it to them, this includes any distinguishing features and details of a car.

"If a member of the public is suspicious about the authenticity of the note tell the retailer and ask for an alternative note. If they do not notice the note until they have left the shop they should take it to their local police station and hand it in at the front desk. As with businesses officers ask that the public remember as much as possible about the person and place where they believe they received the note."
