Date published: 15/09/2005

Rochdale's Golden Mosque has recently had its doors open to all parts of the community, as a way of breaking down cultural and religious barriers. An open evening was organised by the Rochdale Inner Area Sports for All on Tuesday 13 September.

Mayor of Rochdale Councillor Ashley Dearnley was welcomed, along with members from all three political parties and members of Christian community.

The evening began with a warm welcome from the President of Golden mosque Mr Tahir Mahmood. He said: "It is vital, following the London bombings for the Muslim community to build a better understanding. This Mosque is not only for the Muslims but for the community and I welcome you all."

Mayor of Rochdale Ashley Dearnley congratulated Sports for All's Golden Mosque youth committee. He said: "The fact that different communities are coming together and getting to know each other, is an important investment for tomorrow."

The Leader of the Conservative party Councillor Ian Duckworth brought smiles as he recalled how he painted the Mosque as a 14 year old "all them years ago" and his delight at being invited.

Councillor Angela Coric said:  "I have attended various Mosques this year. Each time one continues to learn something new about Islam. I thoroughly enjoyed the evening, as have my colleagues. I am proud to have played a part in getting this initiative off the ground."

Information was on display explaining Islam. The president of the Youth committee, Mr Rizwan gave the guests a tour of the Mosque. The Imam, Mulana Irfan, explained the prayer to the guests. Non Muslims then observed the Muslims perform their pray.

Father James commented "It was amazing to observe the Muslim community perform their pray in a mosque. The whole experience was moving.  It has been a thoroughly enjoyable evening."

Mr Shahid, the Chairman from Worldwide C&C Ltd donated the refreshments. He said:  "Communities, faith groups and businesses coming together to promote a better relationship results in having a successful and peaceful town. That is what we all strive for."

The measure of the evening's success was such that plans are already being made for a return visit to one of the Churches. Hanief Mohammed one of the organisers commented, "This is the first Mosque open evening, certainly ever held in the North -West. Non Muslims are not often given the opportunity to observe the performance of pray. The President of Golden Mosque has already confirmed the open evening will now be an annual event for this Mosque."
