Get to Heywood for Fishing Free For All

Date published: 09/08/2005

Heywood Locals are fishing for activities in August, as two free fishing taster days are being offered on Queens Park Boating Lake. The taster days are aimed at encouraging youngsters and those with disabilities to take up the countries most popular pastime, by providing an opportunity to fish with National Federation of Anglers qualified angling coaches.

Mike Cummings from the Mersey Basin Campaign said: “We are hoping to encourage anglers of all abilities by providing these taster days. In the sport of angling there are fewer reasons why people who suffer from disabilities cannot compete with more able bodied participants providing there are suitable facilities available.  While there is much interest in angling there are few facilities in the area that are conducive to angling for those with disabilities.  The flat layout at Queens Park and new paths make it an ideal venue”.

Support is coming in all directions, from including the RMBC, The Community Angling Regeneration Project, British Disabled Angling Association, Mersey Basin Campaign, and local tackle shops.

The days are set to take place on the 21st and 24th of August. All bait and equipment will be supplied and has been made possible thanks to kind contributions from Rochdale Township grants, Rochdale Disability Sports forum and support from local tackle shops including  Rochdale Angling , the Rod Rest, Fisherman’s way and Tight Lines.

Anyone interested in taking part can call Mike Cummings of the Mersey Basin Campaign on 07745 130337/01706 860164 or Lorraine Kershaw on 01706 750513/07709 738507.
